Updated Information May 8, 2020

Dear Parents,

Thank you for continuing to work with your children as we move toward what was supposed to be the end of the regular school year.  As noted before, the actual ending date is scheduled for May 19, 2020.  Due to the closure, we have not been able to finish as we wished.

In order to allow students to pick up items left in school buildings, we have scheduled two dates for retrieval.  The first will occur on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The final date is Saturday, May 16, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  School personnel will be compiling items from desks and lockers into bags with students’ names to be provided when parents arrive at the buildings during these times.  Some Junior High and High School students may need to come into the building to get items out of locker rooms or music rooms.  When coming for pickup, we ask that you return the device provided to your child (iPad or MacBook) and any library book checked out before the closure began (March 12, 2020).

After consultation with the Lawrence County Health Department, a graduation ceremony has been scheduled for Friday, June 12, 2020.  The festivities will begin at 7:00 p.m.  In order to meet distancing rules, Kelley Field will be the venue for the event.  In case of inclement weather, Friday, June 19, 2020 has been scheduled as the rain date.  Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. and to assist with separation we ask that families not come to the field before 5:00 p.m.

While many enjoy attending these ceremonies, we ask that guests are limited to immediate family (parents, siblings and grandparents).  A live stream will be provided during the event so other family members and friends can view the ceremony online.  Information will be posted on the district website regarding directions for online viewing.  Keep in mind that if cases spike and we receive guidance that graduation cannot be held, an alternative option will be exercised.

Due to the low number of cases of COVID in Lawrence County and the relaxation of requirements regarding the virus, a Summer School session has been scheduled.  Consultation with Lawrence County Health Department personnel has also occurred regarding students returning to school buildings.  Precautions will be taken and deep cleaning practices implemented for both the buildings and buses in order to provide a safe environment for students.

The session will begin on Monday, June 15, 2020 and run through Friday, July 17, 2020.  A three-day weekend has been scheduled for July 3, 2020 through July 5, 2020 to allow extra time for Independence Day.  If you are interested in this opportunity for your child, online and hard copy forms will be available for enrollment.  Forms may be obtained at the May 14 and May 16 item pickup event.

Meal delivery will continue through May 19, 2020.  Parents can obtain these meals, Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 3 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.), at the Robinson Elementary entry.  A decision has not been made regarding the provision of meals between May 20 and Summer School.  We are reviewing criteria to see if this is possible.  If additional opportunities to obtain food are available in the community, district personnel will advertise for these groups.  Please continue to view the Aurora School Facebook page for information.

Building offices are now open and personnel are available on a daily basis.  If you have questions regarding any of these topics or any item not covered, please call or email.  In order to provide a safe working environment, we are encouraging communication through these methods.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to progress through this situation.  Better days are ahead!  Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Billy Redus
