Despite rumors of a bed bug "outbreak" in our buildings, at this time only one bug was found in a single building.  In order to control any further issues, a systematic approach is being applied to ensure no additional sightings occur.  A thorough investigation has been completed and extensive cleaning will be conducted.  A treatment will be applied over the weekend to also assist with the process.

The Aurora R-VIII School District will continue to work to identify bed bugs, provide thorough inspections of facilities and have pest control specialists assist with management and control of all pests.

For informational purposes, additional steps are being supplied to assist parents with prevention efforts.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), included are a few ways you can protect yourself and your family:

1. Limit the items your child brings home from school.

2. Inspect items as they arrive from school.

3. Keep school items like backpacks, books, and jackets in a single area of the home separate from sleeping areas. Isolate items from school in a sealed plastic container.

4. Drying items in a clothes dryer on high heat for 30 minutes will kill bed bugs.

4. Watch for clusters of bites, usually in a line, on exposed areas of the body.

If you have any questions regarding bed bugs in our schools, please contact the building principal, school nurse or Central Office administration.  If you have any questions regarding bed bugs found in your home, contact the local health department or the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for information.

Sincerely,

Billy Redus
