On Monday, February 2nd, 2026, the Aurora R-VIII Board of Education unanimously selected Mrs. Jessica Chappell to serve as the new Director of Special Education. Mrs. Chappell has been serving the district since 2024 as the Assistant Director of Special Education. During the last two (2) years, she has also served on a State-Level committee regarding transition services for students. Her time with Dr. Brenda Lakin has allowed her to gain valuable knowledge regarding the specificities of the Aurora R-VIII Special Education Program. Prior to coming to Aurora, Mrs. Chappell served as a Process Coordinator in Republic, a Special Education teacher in Nixa, and even served as a Paraprofessional early in her career. Her experience within the field of Special Education is vast and diverse!

Dr. Lakin will retire after thirty-three (33) years in public education and twenty (20) years as the Director of Special Education in Aurora R8 Schools.
Mrs. Chappell will officially begin her duties as Director of Special Education on July 1, 2026.
