504 Compliance
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance from the United States Department of Education. The Aurora R-VIII School District is a recipient of federal financial assistance from the United States Department of Education and, therefore, is covered by Section 504.

Which Students Are Covered?
Under 504, a person with a disability is defined as an individual who:
- Has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities;
- Has a record of such an impairment; or
- Is regarded as having such an impairment.
Major Life Activities could include the following:

- Hearing
- Walking
- Bending
- Standing
- Learning
- Thinking
- Concentrating
- Reading
- Seeing
- Eating
- Speaking
- Sleeping
- Communicating
- Lifting
- Performing Manual Tasks
Major life activities may also include the operation of the following major bodily functions:
- Immune System
- Bowel
- Brain
- Circulatory
- Normal Cell Growth
